Each year the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education (CAC) recognizes and celebrates the individuals and groups who support, inspire and teach students with exceptional needs in the San Francisco Unified School District. R.O.C.K.’s Adrianna Romero, Beacon Director, and De’Janique (NeNe) Harper, Site Coordinator, were presented as recipients of the 2026 Advocate Worthy of Excellence (AWE) award in San Francisco on Thursday, April 23rd.  We are proud of their work in leading our team at El Dorado Elementary School.

More importantly, the following is the statement from a parent who nominated our team members.

“The R.O.C.K. staff are instrumental in supporting the whole child, especially during times when families need additional care, compassion, and consistency. Miss NeNe and Adrianna exemplify true leadership through meaningful collaboration and a deep commitment to holistic student support.

They intentionally center (my child’s) voice, ensuring he is both seen and heard, while maintaining consistent and thoughtful communication about his progress. Their approach reflects an asset-based mindset—uplifting (my child’s) strengths, nurturing his growth, and fostering a sense of belonging not only for him, but for all students in their care.

What truly sets them apart is how they show up in action. As many families know, it can be challenging for afterschool programs to provide individualized, 1:1 support for students with disabilities. When (my child) needed additional support, Miss NeNe and Adrianna did not hesitate. They proactively partnered with the school and their staff to develop a plan that ensured (my child) had 1:1 paraprofessional support during academic power hour—helping him stay engaged, motivated, and set up for success.

What meant the most to me as a parent was that I did not have to navigate layers of district systems or afterschool procedural barriers to secure the support (my child) needs as a student with specific learning needs. They removed those barriers and led with care, urgency, and solutions.

Their dedication, empathy, and unwavering support make a lasting impact on students and families alike, and they are truly deserving of this recognition.”
